AI-enhanced Corpus-based Teaching Materials

Hi everyone! I hope you’re all doing well 😄

For our first assignment of Current Issues in Teaching course, İremŞevin and I designed an AI-enhanced Corpus-based teaching material using the ASSURE model. The whole process actually went through two stages, and I wanted to share both the idea and what we learned along the way.

At first, we created a worksheet on the present simple vs. present continuous. But after presenting it to our classmates and instructor, we realized that the tasks we designed were too complex for the learners to analyze using corpus tools, and our worksheet did not actually include AI tasks, even though AI use was mentioned in the lesson plan.

The first version of our worksheet and ASSURE lesson plan can be found in the link below:

After reviewing the feedback (Feedback file), we redesigned the material completely. We changed the grammar topic to something more suitable: “can not” vs “must not.” In the revised worksheet, students explore real examples through SKELL, identify patterns, and discover meaning differences inductively. To support their learning, we integrated ChatGPT so students can check their sentences, ask grammar questions, and receive instant feedback.

We followed the ASSURE model and applied Ma et al.’s four principles, designing a simple, clear, step-by-step and visually engaging worksheet on Canva. In this version, corpus and AI finally work together throughout the lesson.

If this material were implemented in a real classroom, I think some challenges might appear (like internet access, unfamiliarity with corpus tools, or students over-relying on AI). But with good guidance, I believe this approach can make grammar learning more meaningful, interactive, and enjoyable.

finally, although challenging, the revision process was rewarding and helped us design materials that are more realistic, learner-friendly, and aligned with the course goals.

Hope you enjoy exploring our work! ✨
